What Are Mini Implant Dentures?

Dental implants and dentures are the two of the most commonly used solutions for missing teeth in dentistry.

However, traditional implants may not be suitable for everyone, and living with dentures can also be a real struggle if they loosen prematurely.

Mini implant dentures are suitable for those looking for a solution to restore their smiles and oral functions.

In this blog, our dental experts at Diana Dizik, D.D.S., General & Cosmetic Dentistry in San Mateo County, California, elaborate on the benefits of mini implant dentures.

How Can Mini Implant Dentures Benefit You?

Compared to traditional implants, mini implants are quite small - about 1.8 to 3 mm in diameter. They are tiny titanium poles that are screwed into the jawbone for stabilizing dentures. The size of the mini implants is designed in such a way that they are even suitable for people with low bone density.

A mini implant denture is supported by implants with exposed balls and O-rings that are used to secure and hold the denture in place.

Procedure

Compared to traditional dental implants, the procedure of placing mini dental implants for dentures is less invasive due to their smaller size. The duration of the procedure and the recovery process are also comparatively shorter.

The process generally involves making a small incision into your gums and then drilling small holes in the jawbone where the implants will be placed. After the implants are placed, the gums are sutured to initiate the healing process.

How Are Mini Implant Dentures Placed and Removed?

Dentures require cleaning and you will have to know how to remove them to do this. Place your thumbs on both sides of the denture and exert equal pressure to gently snap it off the implants.

For setting the denture back, you will have to place the denture gently on the balls of the implant posts with the O-rings over them. Apply light pressure and you can snap them back into place.

Taking Care of Mini Implant Dentures

Just like your natural teeth and traditional dentures, mini implant dentures also require cleaning as they can foster bacteria and plaque that can attack your gums. Brush them gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush and soak them in denture cleaning solutions as recommended by the dentist.

Proper care of mini implant dentures is the key to their optimal functioning and retention.
